Reasons we love Smoothies

Around here, we looooove a breakfast Smoothie (or Smoothie Bowl). Smoothies make such a great breakfast or snack, especially when you make sure to add in protein (like the flaxseed in this recipe) and veggies (like the spinach in this recipe!). For more thoughts on making an awesome Smoothie, check out our blog post on the topic here. You can go wild with things to blend up to make a yummy concoction. It's a great way to incorporate ingredients that might be more challenging for beginner chefs to use, like hemp hearts or frozen cauliflower.

A Smoothie Bowl

Smoothie Bowls are even better than Smoothies because they are thicker than a regular Smoothie, due to having less liquid and generally more ingredients with healthy fats like flaxseed or avocado. A thicker base tastes more like creamy, dreamy soft-serve ice cream and is eaten with a spoon rather than a straw. Many experts recognize that eating food like Smoothies with a spoon (rather than sipping through a straw) can help your body recognize the Smoothie as filling calories. They are also lovely to look at it! Why do we love Smoothie Bowls? Let us count the ways:
  • Fruity
  • Sweet without added sugar
  • Cool and Creamy
  • Nutritious
  • Can add in tons of health foods
  • Fast and easy
  • My kids love them
  • TOPPINGS

The Toppings on your Smoothie Bowl

The best part of Smoothie Bowls, in our opinion, is all the toppings. Oh, the toppings! I love to make healthy Smoothie Bowls (always with veggies and protein!) and then let my three kids put their own yummies on top. Some of our favorite toppings include:
  • Chia seeds and hemp hearts
  • Seeds and nuts of all kinds
  • Slightly melted nut butters
  • Sliced fruit or berries
  • Cacao nibs or chocolate chips

Notes about Blenders:

If you have a lower-powered blender, add the veggies and milk to the blender and blend that first, to ensure that the greens get blended. Then add the other ingredients and continue to blend. If you make a lot of Smoothies, we highly recommend investing in a high powered blender. Being able to dump in everything and letting it go is such a perk! Plus, you never end up with chunks of spinach in your Smoothie.
